What's the cheapest form of accommodation in the US for 3 months?

I'm planning on heading over there from australia for 3 months or so in 2012 to visit a friend who lives in Denver CO, we might then go to another state for a short amount of time towards the end or something. What are some good ideas for accommodation for the three months, and how much would they be?
